How the calculator works

There are two modes. "What do I need?" solves for the minimum exam score required to finish the course at your target grade. "What will I get?" predicts your final course grade based on an expected exam score.

Required exam score formula

Required = (Target − Current × (1 − Weight)) ÷ Weight where Weight is the final exam's share of your course grade (0–1)

For example: current grade 78%, target 80%, final worth 30% → Required = (0.80 − 0.78 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 84.7%.

Predicted grade formula

Predicted = Current × (1 − Weight) + Exam × Weight straight weighted average of pre-final work and exam score

Reading the results

If the required score shows over 100%, the target grade is mathematically impossible — you'll need to lower your target. If it shows a very low number, you have a comfortable cushion going into the exam.

The what-if table shows a range of possible exam scores alongside the resulting course grade, so you can see exactly how much each exam point matters.

Where to find your current grade

Check your course's learning management system (Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, etc.). Use the overall weighted grade, not just your average on individual assignments.

Where to find the final exam weight

It's in your course syllabus — usually listed as a percentage or fraction of your total grade. Common values are 20%, 25%, 30%, and 40%.

Frequently asked questions

What if the required score is over 100%?

Your target grade is impossible given your current standing and the exam's weight. Lower your target grade until the required score drops to 100% or below. The what-if table shows what course grade you can still realistically achieve.

What does "current grade" mean exactly?

It's your weighted grade in the course before the final exam — the combined score on all assignments, quizzes, midterms, and other graded work so far. Your gradebook in Canvas or Blackboard will show this as your overall percentage.

My professor uses weighted categories — how do I handle that?

Use the Advanced mode. Enter each graded category (Homework, Quizzes, Midterm, etc.) with its weight and your current score in that category. The calculator will compute your true current grade and use it in the formula.

Can I use this for a class where the final replaces my lowest test?

Not directly — that policy changes the effective weight of the final depending on your test scores. Use your professor's own grade calculator or gradebook for that scenario.

How accurate is this?

Perfectly accurate for a standard weighted-grade course. The only variable is your "current grade" input — if your gradebook shows a rounded number, your result may be off by a fraction of a percent.
