How age in years, months and days is counted
The calculator counts whole years from your birth date to today, then the whole months since your last birthday, then the days left over. Leap years and the different lengths of each month are handled for you, so a date like 31 January to 1 March comes out right rather than off by a day or two.

Age on a specific date
Advanced mode answers "how old was I on…" and "how old will I be on…". Useful for working out your age at a past event, at a future deadline, or on the day a rule kicks in — a driving age, a pension date, an exam cut-off.
Chronological age for school
Schools often record a child's age in years and months for grade placement and assessment scoring, because a few months either way can change the reference group. The years-and-months figure at the top is exactly that number.
Leap-day birthdays
Born on 29 February? In non-leap years the calculator treats your birthday as 1 March for the countdown, which is the most common convention. Your age in years still increases once per calendar year.
