Steps to Miles Calculator

Convert your step count into miles or km using your own stride length — not a flat 2,000-steps-a-mile guess — and see it against real distance milestones on a live bar.

How to use the steps to miles calculator

Enter your step count, choose your sex, and add your height — that's enough for a personalized distance, since stride length scales with how tall you are. No height? It falls back to a sensible average stride for your sex.

Tap Go advanced to enter your own measured stride length instead, plus your weight, walking speed and treadmill incline to see calories burned and a full speed-vs-calories curve.

Why a flat "2,000 steps a mile" is wrong for most people

Most steps-to-miles tools use one constant for everyone. But stride length depends heavily on height — a 5'2" walker and a 6'2" walker cover very different ground in the same number of steps. This calculator estimates your stride from your height using the same 0.413/0.415 formula pedometer manufacturers use, so the distance is actually yours.

How the calculation works

Distance = Steps × Stride lengthStride (in) ≈ Height (in) × 0.413 (men) or × 0.415 (women)

If you've measured your own stride — walk 10 steps, measure the distance, divide by 10 — enter it directly in Go advanced and it overrides the height-based estimate.

What the milestone bar shows

Instead of a bare number, the bar plots your distance against recognizable benchmarks: a mile, a 5K, a 10K, a half marathon and a full marathon. It's a quicker way to feel what 8,000 or 15,000 steps actually means than a raw mileage figure.

Steps to calories, not just steps to distance

Distance alone doesn't say how much energy a walk took — that depends on your weight, pace and any incline. The advanced calorie section uses the ACSM walking metabolic equation, and the curve chart shows how much a faster pace or a steeper incline changes the burn for the same distance.

Common uses

Turning a fitness tracker's daily step count into a distance you can picture, planning a walking route to hit a mileage goal, or estimating the calorie cost of a treadmill incline walk. Pair it with the Pace Calculator to plan the time, or the Calorie Calculator to see how it fits a daily target.

Common questions

How many steps are in a mile?

It depends on your stride length, but a common rule of thumb is about 2,000–2,500 steps per mile. Stride length scales with height and sex, so this calculator uses your own height (or a custom stride you enter) instead of one flat number.

How is steps to miles calculated?

Distance = steps × stride length, converted to miles. Stride length is estimated from your height using the standard pedometer formula (height × 0.413 for men, × 0.415 for women), or you can enter your own measured stride in Go advanced.

How many miles is 10,000 steps?

For an average adult stride, 10,000 steps is roughly 4.5–5 miles, but it varies with your height and stride length — enter 10,000 above with your own height for an exact figure.

Does walking speed change the distance?

No — distance depends on how many steps you take and how long your stride is, not how fast you walk. Speed (and incline) only change how long the walk takes and how many calories it burns, which is what the advanced calorie section estimates.

How accurate is the calorie estimate?

It uses the ACSM walking metabolic equation, a standard formula based on your weight, walking speed and incline. It's a solid field estimate for steady walking, not a lab measurement — actual calorie burn varies with fitness level, terrain and body composition.
